A unit to cool the air supplied to a building or to dissipate the heat from machinery, ovens and other types of equipment that produce heat. Air coolers are used in ventilation and air conditioning systems for industrial, public and residential buildings, as well as in refrigeration systems for electrical generators, computers and radio and chemical equipment. Air coolers may have surface, drip or type of combination.
In recuperative surface air coolers, air reduces the temperature by transferring heat through flat or finned surfaces (flat or tubular) that are washed on the opposite side by a refrigerant (ammonia or freon) or secondary refrigerant (water or brines ). In regenerative rotary or rotary air coolers, air periodically dissipates heat to cooled layers made of metal or plastic sheets or grids, stone chips or porcelain rings. In drip coolers, air is cooled by water or brine sprayed by atomisers. The principles of the first two types of units mentioned above are incorporated into the design of the combination air cooler. Recuperative surface coolers and drip coolers are the most widespread types.
