A hexadecimal crawl is an open sandbox-style adventure that originated in old-school D & D games. In a hexadecimal drag, the GM produces an interesting Points of Interest (POI) map for players to explore within a fairly large geographical area. The map is given to the players, usually as an element in the character. They usually have a reason to explore the area, but it is unclear how to achieve their goal without first exploring the map.

The map is divided into hexagons, hence the name. These help players and GM determine how far things are, and whether PCs will need to camp in the desert along the way. They also tell GM which route players will take as they travel, which can lead players to stumble over hidden POIs. As they travel, the different areas of the desert have "random" encounters, which are actually based on the type of terrain and the dens of nearby monsters.

The player's experience of a hexadecimal scan is to discover many secrets about an area and explore it however they want. It feels like a free exploration, though there are usually good hooks to explain why they are here in the first place. Then, of course, PCs will find more hooks along the way.

Points of interest in the hexadecimal map are the meat and drink of the hexadecimal trace. In POIs, players encounter monsters, humans or the undead who live in ancient ruins. These creatures can be friendly, neutral or hostile. Wrecked monsters in ruins. In large ruins, often multiple types of monsters form a symbiotic existence. Humans hide in ruins or make new peoples inside or on top of them. The undead are unique because they can unite the history of ruin with the present (or not, they could be recent undead, say a vampire who moved or a necromancer who creates problems or a ghost of a recently hanged criminal).
