Ram Gopal Varma was born in Hyderabad, the capital of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. He initially owned a video store before becoming one of India's top filmmakers. A movie buff during his youth, Varma would watch American and Indian cinema regularly. As a young man, he attended the Siddhartha Engineering College in Vijayawada. Varma began his career at the telugu cinema (Hyderabad film industry) where he made a big mark with his debut film Shiva, a violent and stylized actioner set against a backdrop of university. At the age of 28, with little film training, Varma was able to convince Nagarjuna, a young Telugu star, to act on his debut. Nagarjuna was drawn by narrative of writing and intelligence exhibited by young Varma. Shiva was a historic success for the industry and was redone by Varma in the Hindi language a year later.

His next was the thrilling adventure film, Kshana Kshanam, starring Venkatesh and Sridevi. Varma followed with films like Raatri, a tribute to "The Exorcist" starring Revati and Om Puri (which Varma reworked more than a decade later in Hindi as Bhoot) and Antham, a stylized crime drama with Nagarjuna and Urmila Matondkar (That Varma would also work later as Satya) - but was not able to achieve the commercial success of his first feature film. His next release Gaayam, with Jagapathi Babu and Urmila Matondkar, was a violent crime drama set in Hyderabad. The script was co-written by Tamil filmmaker Mani Ratnam, and the script based on 'The Godfather'. It became a hit for Varma. He then decided to start his own production, Varma Corporation Limited, and produced successful Telugu movies such as Money (later rebranded as Love Ke Liye Kuchh Bhi Karega), Money Money (his sequel), Gulabi and Anaganaga Oka Roju.

His first major success in Hindi cinema (Mumbai film industry) was the commercial success Rangeela, a romantic drama with Aamir Khan and Urmila Matondkar. ARKANSAS. Rahman, a Tamil music composer, was introduced to the Hindi audience by Varma with this film and won the award for best film music.

Varma followed with the puzzle of the saga of gangsters Satya, an epic of the violent crime set in the underworld of Mumbai. The film was sandy and realistic, reinventing the crime genre in Indian cinema. Varma had done extensive research for the film, and reworked certain elements of his previous film Antham. Satya was widely considered Varma's first true masterpiece. Made with a reduced budget and with new faces, the film won prizes for actor Manoj Bajpai and music composer Vishal Bharadwaj. Satya became a turning point in Varma's career, winning the best picture of the year, and Varma would forever be associated with Mumbai noirs.

Varma then, with fellow director Shekhar Kapur, created a 1998 film production joint venture called India Talkies. The first venture of the production house was the ambitious terror drama 'Dil Se', with Shahrukh Khan and Manisha Koirala. The movie was a box office failure, and Talkies from India would be short-lived. Varma would again focus on his own production house Varma Corp.

The hard masterpiece 'Shool' followed soon after, written and produced by Varma. The film described the life of an honest police officer in the violent and harsh countryside of Bihar. The film was a commercial and critical success with Manoj Bajpai and Sayaji Shinde winning awards for their performances. Varma then lightened things up with the romantic drama "Mast." The film was inspired by Varma's own college days, and featured Aftab Shivdasani in an award-winning spin as a crazy college film student.
